ACHES has been set up to promote, enhance, and protect human and environmental wellbeing. ACHES provides a forum to highlight and advance the truth about legal, medical and scientific information relating to current and emerging technologies. Our ‘Weekly Picks’ summarise the most relevant news pieces from our partners and collaborators to raise awareness of the health harms caused by such technologies, and offer much-needed solutions to enhance our health.
Meta in Court: A Tobacco Moment…And Smoking Gun!
The social media giant, Meta, is now on trial over claims that it designed its platform deliberately to be addictive to children and young people. Four US states are in court seeking billions of dollars from Meta. These states are acting on behalf of 29 states that filed a lawsuit back in 2023 – that the technology company violated child privacy laws. One whistleblower told the court that the number of teenagers exposed to graphic content was at least 100 times higher than Meta reported. As we have described in our longer post, Unplug to Uplift, the business model of Meta was aimed at “hook the users; hold them for as long as they can; harvest their data; (and) hide the truth from the public”. The trial is expected to last at least 5–6 weeks. See here and another post for more details about the ongoing trial.
Wireless Technology, Public Health, and the Fight for Change
The EM Radiation Research Trust has a superb set of comprehensive and regular infographic postings by Eileen O’Connor. Collectively these highlight the harms of wireless technology, concerning radiofrequency exposures in children, the dangerous assumptions behind labelling EMF concerns as ‘misinformation’, and much more. Also featured on this site are handy tips for saying no to smart meters, as well as expert insights and advice in archive format on independent scientific, medical, regulatory, and discussions on electromagnetic wireless radiation (EMR) and its potential public health impacts. Check it out!
Help Stop HR 2289 Federal Bill in Congress
Americans for Responsible Technology (ART) is encouraging people to stop the bill HR 2289 in Congress. This bill represents an unprecedented pre-emption of the authority of local governments to manage public rights-of-way and land use. Crucially, it also strips local governments of the rights and authority over telecommunications deployment. In the 1996 Telecommunications Act, Congress wisely granted local authorities control over how wireless technology is deployed in their communities. HR 2289 takes that control away and gives it to the federal government instead. This bill is therefore unnecessary and represents an unprecedented federal takeover of local control. See the ART website on ways to take action!
Helpful Resources and Booklet on ART
Americans for Responsible Technology is a coalition of grassroots
organisations that have come together to protect the health and safety of children, primarily, and adults suffering from exposures to wireless technology, including 5G. If you want help in talking to people about the potential harm from wireless radiation, their site has some advocacy materials produced by experts in the field. There is a helpful booklet “Undeniable Risk“ that chronicles the history of the science on wireless radiation, and a recent major study by the National Toxicology Program at the NIH. Among the many treasures, they provide a helpful “The BabySafe Booklet“ about the potential harms of wireless radiation written for pregnant women, plus specific tips to reduce exposure when a woman is expecting. Access their toolkit “ART’s Treasure Chest”, as this provides a plethora of quotes from top experts that people can use to customise in their own presentations or conversations.
Digital ID: Off the Table? One Login Suggests Not
Last month, the Together Declaration and many campaigners helped to stop the rollout of a Digital ID plan. The idea that ordinary life could become conditional on a government Digital ID system is abhorrent. Thus, education and raising public awareness shows we have power to thwart such measures, as Digital ID – for now – is off the table. However, this is not the end of the story. The GOV.UK One Login continues to expand, and other related initiatives, such as GOV UK App and GOV UK Wallet, are increasingly connected to each other. The One Login is intended to provide a common means of signing in, and eventually will become the single way to access all government services online.
The concern is whether such a single-login approach provides genuine choice, whether you can access government services without it, and what data is being linked? Notably, what safeguards prevent identity or eligibility checks from expanding into areas where they are unnecessary. For example, could this system be used as an ultimate control mechanism to access services or limit access to them? Company directors have already experienced how digital identity requirements have morphed from voluntary into a legal obligation, as company directors must now verify their identity. We must now ensure that Digital ID is not camouflaged to re-emerge as a One Login. For company directors, the Together Declaration toolkit provides available options.
