ACHES has been set up to promote, enhance, and protect human and environmental wellbeing. ACHES provides a forum to highlight and advance the truth about legal, medical and scientific information relating to current and emerging technologies. Our ‘Weekly Picks’ summarise the most relevant news pieces from our partners and collaborators to raise awareness of the health harms caused by such technologies, and offer much-needed solutions to enhance our health.
Back to School: Protecting Children from Harmful Wi-Fi
Earlier this week, the Children’s Health Defense (CHD) published a warning to parents that children are being bombarded with wireless technology the moment they enter the school gates. Wi-Fi routers stay on in every classroom, often all day, and tablets and laptops are in children’s laps for hours each day. An increasing number of cell towers and 5G antennas have been installed on or close to school property; yet, parents are rarely notified and no real health reviews are performed.
Children’s brains and bodies absorb more wireless radiation than adults, thereby increasing their exposure to harmful Wi-Fi radiation over their lifetimes. Thousands of peer-reviewed studies have linked wireless radiation exposure to cancer, sleep disruption, behavioural issues, and memory problems. Most schools have not factored this risk into any policy. Parents have the right to make informed choices about their child’s school experience. CHD has now published a Safe Tech guide, which provides parents with five direct questions to raise with teachers or school IT departments on topics such as wireless infrastructure, daily device use, wired alternatives, and existing exposure policies. See the CHD website to download informative flyers and factsheets.
Limited Screen Time in One LA School
The above concerns have prompted action: an interesting story this week revealed how many districts and a growing number of states have passed limits to screen time in schools. The school board passed the following notice, “starting this week, 1st grade and under will have no screen time at all. In November, the rest of elementary school classes will have limits, with middle and high school students following later in the year. For some teachers, such as those who use technology for subjects such as science, this poses a challenge. The rollout of screen limits, especially for subjects taught using it, poses some difficulties and “no perfect solution on how to roll out [screen limits] to a school district the size of ours”. The encouraging trend of reinstating traditional teaching approaches is welcomed.
No Phones Credited with Sporting Success
This week, Patricia Burke for Safe Tech International first wishes her readers a happy Solar Eclipse week. She then features how a New York Team vying for a Little League World Series is crediting its success on a ban of the use of phones during team activities. They say that cell phone restrictions before games are the key to the team’s extraordinary success this season. Apparently, on game days Port Washington players put their phones in a bucket 5 hours before the start of play to stay focused. A mother of one player said: “talking constantly about the game, talking about what’s happened so far this summer, and for sure, more natural face-to-face time with one another.” See the News Video.
Suicide Rates In Teen Girls Rising in UK, Canada and Australia
The cause of the adolescent mental health crisis is sadly not confined to just the USA, but is everywhere. A new post on her Substack by Jean M Twenge explains that some critics wrongly assume that suicide trends in young adults are notable in the USA, but not observed internationally. Studies using the Global Burden of Disease databases, contain only estimates of suicide rates, not actual rates. Jean has gathered recent studies on trends in adolescent suicide rates across Europe, South Korea, and Japan, which indicate that suicide rates have been increasing for adolescent girls in most countries. She also found data on the adolescent suicide rate over time in Australia, Canada and the UK – specifically England and Wales. She has conveniently combined rates in 5-year blocks to make the overall trends clearer. See her post.
Frank Clegg: Safety Concerns of 5G and Wireless Technologies
The Former President of Microsoft Canada, Frank Clegg, shares his concerns about safety relating to wireless and 5G technologies. He explains that over 230 scientists and researchers from over 41 countries around the world have formally written to the United Nations, their Member Nations and the World Health Organization expressing their concern over the planned rollout of 5G technology. This is especially the case for vulnerable populations, such as children, pregnant women, and those who are environmentally sensitive (also called EMR-Syndrome). They have been joined by state legislators and federal regulators who have asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to provide evidence that there is no harm from the rollout of 5G technology.
